Even more amazing music videos, plus some really innovative commercials. I've been on a music video kick recently. And all readers of Signalstation get to come along with me! The child locks are on in this weblog and no one's getting out 'til I'm done!
Uncovered
June 26th, 2006The Signalstation Uncovered Mix: a collection of unlikely cover versions that walks the line between the novel and the sublime. 30 minutes of musicians paying tribute to (or walking all over) other musicians.
You've got seven or so days to download it and then it's gone, sucker. Like they say in the ads for the weight loss clinic where they addict you to heroin and then don't feed you, "You snooze, you lose!"

Four French DJs prove that turntables are instruments... which should convince the four people left who don't believe that.
Sobanza Mimanisa Video

I picked up volume 2 of Congotronics yesterday and I gotta tell you... the streets of Kinshasa are lively. Check out this music video for a taste of the musical street life there. Traditional meets modern through fuzzed out amplifiers. Congotronics vol. 2 comes with a CD & a DVD for the price of just a CD. Great musical investment.

Live! On GrimeWave FM
June 16th, 2006What's up, party people. It's Friday night and I've snuck myself into the studio for this week's Grimewave FM at Western Addition Radio.com, available over the internet.
Joe Nice is visiting from Baltimore, so I'm staying out super late in the city to hear him DJ. Right now, he's crashed out on the couch behind me in the studio. How he can sleep with dubstep blazing out of speakers while Subtek plays, I can't guess.
So tune in. There's an hour to go. He might wake up and MC a bit. Otherwise, I'll have pictures up over the weekend.

I was in the front row for this performance last Sunday, snapping pictures. The video's sound just can't compare to what it's actually like in front of the speakers.

80s Videos Ahoy
June 10th, 2006Link: http://www.milinkito.com/los80.php
Friend-of-Signalstation "Ace" dropped us a line about a huge directory of 80s music videos on YouTube. His favorite find so far: Nina Hagen's "New York, New York. My favorite in the first two minutes of browsing is finding the video for Baltimora's "Tarzan Boy", a song that had a brief resurgence in the 90s because it was licensed for Listerine ads. The video features-- uh, Mr. Baltimora himself I guess-- getting so into his synth-pop song that the chorus demands he do the double-fisted I'm-really-into-this-song motion that worked so well for Kenny Loggins and his ilk.
Bang. There goes your afternoon.

The Signal: EP016
June 4th, 2006Link: http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=6C9A5EE2672AB530

The Signal EP016: We focus this time around on spoken word material. Nothing kills a mix of music quite like putting some spoken word stuff in the middle of it. I've found that it's always the part of a mix you get tired of first.
But at Signalstation HQ, we have a fair amount of it we'd like to share with those of you who haven't heard of some of our favorite artists, so we got around the problem by making a 30 min. mix of nothing but people talking. Most are accompanied by music, so it's not a straight gab-fest.
As usual, the download is available for a week, so act fast. The tracklisting is after the cut. If you hear something you like, please do support the artists by purchasing their material where possible.

Carrots want to go to the party in my tummy?
