Zunguzung
May 27th, 2007What's music journalism if you can't hear what the writer is talking about?
Check out this fascinating aural safari as wayneandwax.com tracks the footsteps of the Zunguzung reggae-born toasting style as KRS-One imports it to hip-hop, Puerto Ricans take the sound for reggaeton, and references and echoes are heard all over.
I found it fascinating, especially since the piece of sound DNA being charted was one I knew from BDP and Black Star and (apparently) dozens of places without drawing the connection myself.

May 24th, 2007The Signal: EP028
May 16th, 2007
The Signal EP028: Ah, 28. A magical age. With this latest installment, we have more of the sort of thing that we tend to have. Nationalities included this time out are American, British, Norwegian, Kenyan, Japanese, Finnish, and Indian. And you can leave your passport in your wall safe, 'cause only your ears are doing the traveling. Whether or not inoculations are called for will be left to the discretion of the individual.
The link will be up forever, probably, but the file won't be. Limited time offer. Also, no need to peek ahead at the MORE link to see the playlist. It ain't there. An explanation will be, though.
US Foreign Policy as Explained by Resident Evil 4
May 6th, 2007Link: http://yeoldecomicblogge.blogspot.com/2007/04/off-topic-us-foreign-policy-as.html

Ye Olde Comick Booke Blogge is probably on to something here. The writer has found some insight into our current situation in Iraq by, of course, playing through Resident Evil 4 a second time.
For Your Consideration: All Songs
May 6th, 2007Good stuff to download from the All Things Considered concert podcast vaults:
1) Arcade Fire
They have lots of other great concerts available streaming (The Decemberists, Cat Power, Belle & Sebastian, New Pornographers and lots more), but I prefer to download & listen when wandering about, so it's download-y links you get.
DJ /rupture is My Hero
May 5th, 2007I just got the new DJ /rupture vs Filastine release last night and am listening to it for the first time while I type these words.
I've always had big love for /rupture and check his weblog religiously for new sounds. The minute I heard he had a new mix out, I was reaching for the Paypal button.
And he pays off again... opening with some Various Production "Hater" and then later, dropping Joanna Newsom in the mix. BIG MUSIC MAGIC! There's also some spoken word, sounds from around the world, singers from the middle east, reggaeton rhythms. Eclectic and electric.
If you wanna hear, you wanna go here and get your order in. Nine bucks plus shipping for US.
