Bass for Your New Year's Face
December 28th, 2007I've been listening to this one for a few months and it's still killin' it with heavy, heavy bass sounds... it's Sam Supa's Falling Into Oct. 2007 Mix and if you don't have speakers with huge woofers and a subwoofer that scares you, the next best thing is to strap on headphones and turn this monster up.
Oh, and how was Xmas? Did you get everything you wanted? How's the cessation of desire, the state of total satiation treating you?
Looking forward to a satori-filled New Year's,
Your SignalStation Pals
The Bomb Squad Loves Emcee Child
December 18th, 2007How cool is this?
In a recent interview, Hank Shocklee, one of the producers who helped shape the sound of Public Enemy, listed our friend Emcee Child as one of the people he's listening to these days.
Trapped in a Chimney 2007 Mix
December 16th, 2007
Trapped in a Chimney 2007 Mix: a collection of oddball, mashed up, pretty, and anti-Christmas songs.
Available for a limited time. Tracklist is in the id3 tags. Photo credit goes to Olivander, who was kind enough to post the original image on Flickr with a Creative Commons license. Good on 'im.
The Signal: EP037
December 15th, 2007
The Signal: EP037 - Skulls glowing with radiation, just in time for the holidays! It's a new Signal mix, full of the usual stuff. We like what we like. Thematic connections! Curious covers, especially of songs we've already featured! Every once in awhile, hip hop comes back after being neglected!
The link is live only for a short while. Support any artists you discover and like, please, to the best of your ability. Also, make full use of public libraries.
After the cut, you'll find some notes from me about why songs made the mix. If you want the names of artists and tracks, you'll have to check out the id3 tags.
(Un)Wanted
December 15th, 2007Sound artists did some polling to figure out what people like, and don't like, when it comes to music.
After tallying everything up, they composed and recorded a Most Wanted and a Most Unwanted song. Of course, you can hear them both at UBUWEB.
What do people like? Love, saxophones, R&B mid-tones.
What's don't people like? 20 minute songs with bagpipes, tubas, sopranos rapping about cowboys, and kids singing about shopping at Wal-Mart.
I bet you can guess which one I shut off after a minute and which one I'm digging the hell out of.
She's Got the Moves
December 15th, 2007Two of my favorite music videos that feature transvestites lip-synching:
The New Pornographers - "Sing Me Spanish Techno"
The Knife - "Pass This On"
Ida Maria - "Oh My God"
December 4th, 2007I have listened to this song and watched this video probably about 20 times today.
Maybe you should try it at least once.
What does it sound like? I described it to friends as sounding like what you would get if you could splice Bjork with Joan Jett, then have her do lead vocals for The Strokes. Sounds unlikely, but it's true.
Britney in Disguise
December 1st, 2007This is pretty hilarious:
Over at WFMU, the famously eclectic and hip radio station in New Jersey, one of the employees of the station took a CD-R of Britney Spears' last album and disguised it as obscure German music from an artist called Anna Elektronische.
Would anyone fall for it and play Anna on the air? Of course!
