Patton Oswalt as ... The Famous Flamer!

by Michael SignalStation

WFMU just finished up its annual pledge drive and Patton Oswalt made an appearance on "The Greatest Show on WFMU" with Tom Sharpling. He appeared in character as The Famous Flamer, a Type-A personality guy who specializes in helping used car dealerships have exciting, successful sales drives. (The character is obviously strongly influenced by the Landis documentary "Slasher.")

Now, the entire archived episode is available at WFMU, and even though it also has live musical performances by Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie as well as Ted Leo, it is also full of people being thanked for pledges and can get godawful boring.

So I did you the favor of editing out Patton's initial appearance as he spins out his character and gets the crew of the radio show excited with his patented used car salesman tactics. You can download it here.

If you listen to the whole show, Patton's character pops up between pledge thank yous and whatnots, so you're not getting all of him. He even talks out of character at a later point, so... it's up to you. I'm just trying to save you some time.

Patton's funny, but it's almost painful listening to that square NPR guy trying to keep up with him. He typifies all the bad stereotypes about middle class white liberal NPR listeners.

Yeah... and amazingly enough, that guy's Tom Scharpling, host of the show and a guy who's in the comedy world himself.

Patton keeps trying after the excerpt I cut out, but no one is using his new names for pledges or buying into his schtick, so he disappears for awhile. And who can blame him?

In what capacity is Tom Sharping in comeday? I can't see him as anything but a foil.

Not many people like rape jokes. Maybe after she gets done fucking Matt Damon Sarah Silverman can help Patton out.

The comedian I recently saw in NYC said: "I'm a rapist, so I know I'm gettin laid tonight..."

I don't know that I've heard anything of Scharpling's, but just in case your computer doesn't have the Google, here's his Wikipedia bio:
